The people with disabilities are prone to experiencing adverse socioeconomic outcomes like the lower level of employment, less education, poorer health, and higher poverty rate compare to the people without disabilities.
The inability of the people with disabilities to have access to full social and economic inclusion is due to two major factors, which are discrimination and stigmatization. These two factors have destroyed the lives of so many people with disabilities.
This is why international organizations and different government of nations created schemes that will remove the discrimination and stigmatization aspects, and thereby create a better life and enabling society for this type of people.
These schemes created are sometimes referred to as the rehabilitation schemes.
Rehabilitation in this aspect is the action of restoring people with disabilities to former privileges or reputations after a period of disfavor. Which means that various organizations set up rehabilitation schemes to restore what people with disabilities have been deprived of back to them., such things are education and the rest as mentioned earlier.
The Government of India is not an exception in this aspect, and that is why the Deendayal Disabled Rehabilitation Scheme was created.
The Deendayal Disabled Rehabilitation scheme is initially known as the scheme to promote voluntary actions for persons with disabilities. It is being controlled by a section known as the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities., which is under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
The scheme as implemented by the Government of India has some objectives. These objectives are
- To create an enabling environment to ensure equal opportunities, equity, social justice and empowerment of persons with disabilities.
- To encourage voluntary action for ensuring effective implementation of the people with disabilities.
For these objectives to be achieved, the Government of India also creates a way of approach and strategy. The approach is simply to provide financial support or assistance to voluntary organizations to make available the whole range of services necessary for the rehabilitation of persons with disabilities. This includes the strategy of training and awareness generation, education, development of daily living skills, early intervention and skill development oriented towards employability.
The implementation of the Deendayal Disabled Rehabilitation Scheme has really done well because of the result so far and thereby encourage the implementing organization for the continuity of the scheme. (Deendayal Disabled Rehabilitation Scheme 2020)
